Yentl
Written by my friend Betty Walls
The other day I was flipping around on the channels on our direct.tv and ran across the movie Yentl. It is an old Barbara Streisand movie about a young Jewish girl (played by Barbara) whose father was a Rabbi. Her father had died, and she wanted to go to school. This was back in the day when women were not allowed to go to school to study. So she cut her hair and got into some all-male Jewish school to study the Torah. As you can only imagine she had a pretty hard time disguising herself. And she had to room with another student who was a male. So she had a hard time keeping her secret from him. But she really did excel in school. I didn’t get to see the very end but I do know that she was falling in love with her roommate. Thankfully these days men and women can both get good educations. Gone are the days when women were left to do the house cleaning and raise the children. I think that we have to thank the women who fought for women’s rights.
