Faith over Fear, Truth 2 for Thursday

October 27, 2011 by Pam Maynard

Faith Over Fear – Truth 2
HOW TO
a thought from Jen Miller

(Read part 1 here)

I shared in Part 1 how I’m striving to live in faith over fear, “getting it” from my head into my lifestyle and sharing it with others, and how I’ve had to ask “How?”  How does one embrace within the ugly realities of this life “faith over fear?”  I shared Truth 1:  We can’t do it alone.  We can’t embrace faith over fear by ourselves, alone.  Ecclesiastes 4:12 “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”

Truth 2:  Talk truth.

There’s far too much depth in the Truth 2 concept to share in this short e-Inspiration, so I encourage you to explore this further on your own, beyond what I offer you here:
1.  Truth-talk to your two strands, about how you’re fearing and what you’re specifically fearing:
  • that other human being in your life who is sharing Faith in God and His Word with you – together, and
  • God your Father who says, “The truth will make you FREE.”  (John 8:32)

Of course, there is another aspect of truth at work here, in addition to how and what you are fearing:

  • God’s TRUTHS about how to deal with and respond to your fears to press through them and conquer them.

2.  Self-talk truth.  I’m better able to press through my fears (and often just knock ’em out with one swift punch) when I self-talk God’s truths.

I’ve considered several scriptures that urge truth-talking.  One has to do with HOW I think, thus affecting my self-talk:  “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” (Proverbs 23:7)
When I self-talk DOWN to (and about) myself regarding my fears, you can bet I’m going to stay down and in fear.  When I self-talk God’s TRUTHS (rather than my own human ones), He’s proved to me the two scriptures above.
Again, I’ve had to ask, what is God’s truths that speak specifically to my fears that I can self-talk whenever I feel those gnarly fingers of fear grasping at me?  There are SO many “God truths” about fear, I can only list a few here, so again I encourage you to seek out more on your own.
  • “GREATER is HE that is WITHIN ME than he that is within the world.” I John 4:4
  • “With God ALL [ALL!] things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26)
  • “I CAN do ALL [ALL!] things through Christ who gives STRENGTH.” Philippians 4:13
  • “TRUST in the Lord with ALL [ALL!] your heart and do NOT depend on your own understanding [the way circumstances look to you through your human eyes].  In ALL [ALL] your ways acknowledge HIM [thank Him for who He is, the power and empowerment of His Spirit living within you, and ASK HIM for what you need, including courage and wisdom] and He WILL direct your path.”  Proverbs 3:5-6
  • “HE is able to do EXCEEDINGLY, ABUNDANTLY more than we could ask or imagine.”  Ephesians 3:20 (Another plug for taking your fears to HIM and asking for what you need.)
Another part of truth-talking is ASKING for what I need when I’m afraid.  Not only asking God my Father for what I need, but also asking my human “strand” who is braided tight with me and God in this life journey.  My human “strand” is so important because one way God “works for the good of those who love Him and are called to His purpose” (Romans 8:28) is through OTHERS.  He said, “ASK and you will receive, SEEK and you will find, KNOCK and the door will be open to you.” Matthew 7:7  We have a multifaceted, limitless GOD who does not limit every scripture to one meaning.  I believe this command scripture is not only directed toward us asking God for our needs, but being PROACTIVE to ask, seek, and knock with other Christ-centered believers sharing our lives.
To gain the reinforcements I need to help me press through and conquer my fears, I’ve had to be proactive to CHOOSE to ask, seek, and knock with God and with Godly others while simultaneously self truth-talking.
Many times, the Word of God addresses the reality of being afraid, fearing. Self-talk sometimes has to be a power-punch from God’s Word to my thoughts and heart – speaking strongly, firmly, resolutely to myself what He says firmly to me:
“Do not fear.” (17 times in the NIV)
“Do not be afraid.” (70 times in the NIV)
He’s a powerful, faithful, loving, and gentle FATHER who promises: “I will never leave you for forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5)
Thank you, God!  Thank you for the living POWER of Your Word (Your truths) that empowers me to press through my fears with FAITH, the living POWER of Your spirit within me and within Christ-centered believers in my life.  With You, “ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE.”   (Matthew 19:26)
