Book Review: Can You Have Too Much of a Good Thing?

October 18, 2011 by Pam Maynard

HowardB. Wigglebottom Learns too Much of a Good Thing is Bad
Written by HowardBinkow
Illustrated by Susan F. Cornelison

Meet Howard B. Wigglebottom, a cute and mischievous bunny with lopsided look how much of a good thing is too much.   It’s Howard’s Birthday and he can eat and do as much as he wants.  After all, if one is good, two is better, isn’t a whole bunch of  a good thing the best?  Howard learns over and over that this logic isn’t necessarily  true.

It all starts with the huge brownie sundae Howard gets to eat for his birthday Breakfast.  His tummy didn’t think that was such as think as too much of a good thing.  Next his Mom gave him bubblegum treats to share with his class.  But Howard at so many pieces that he couldn’t answer the cute girl that wanted to walk home with him after school.   My favorite part is the 83 balloons that Howard has to have, because you can’t have enough of a good thing.  First it’s fun. Then it gets scary and hot.  Then geese pop his balloons and his mom rescues him, only after he loses his britches doing flips in the air.  Later than night, his mom gives him the choice to eat as much carrot cake as he wants.  He can even play video games and watch TV as long as he wants.  But Howard has learned something very important that day: you can have too much of a good thing.

Children ages 3 to 7 will love the floppy bunny adventures, the bright and detailed illustrations and the lessons Howard learns along the way.  This wonderfully illustrated hardcover picture book even includes Lessons and Reflections, to reinforce what children just learned in the book.  Repetition is the key to learning new concepts and Mr. Binkow does this very well.  The message, “something so good could make him feel so bad,” doesn’t only apply to cake, bubblegum and balloons.  Parents can remind children when they want to go for that 7th ride on the merry-go-round, that it may be too much.

I give this book 5 ink drops!

My 8 year old loved it but said it would have been better in 2nd grade when he ate 10 Oreos at once.

Happy Reading!
