Does it make you cringe when your kids use a water fountain or drink out of a garden hose? I am totally that mom I will admit it, but I do like for my kids to drink water when we are playing outside. I can always toss a few water bottles in our bag, but then that’s extra plastic going into the trashcan. So now we are trying the LifeStraw, the Better Water Bottle for Kids!
About LifeStraw Play
LifeStraw Play is the first water bottle with filter designed for kids. The 10 oz. bottle incorporates 2-stage filtration with a sturdy leak-proof design. Ideal for having access to safe drinking water at home, at school, while traveling or outdoors. The 10-ounce leak-proof bottle is easy-to-clean, BPA-free, and features unique customizable sticker options. For every Play purchased, one child in a developing country receives clean drinking water for an entire school year through Follow the Liters.
The filter uses advanced hollow fiber membrane technology (0.2 microns) to remove waterborne bacteria and protozoa up to 4,000 litres (1,000 gallons). The second stage of filtration is a replaceable activated carbon capsule to improve taste, reduce chlorine and organic chemical matter for up to 100 litres (26 gallons).
My Review
I definitely appreciate this kid-friendly bottle design. There are several colors to pick from so every child can have their own color combination. And it comes with stickers to make it uniquely their own bottle! Plus the bottle holds about 10 ounces which is a great size for their little hands when they are running around. It is leak-proof so I don’t have to worry about spills in the back seat on our way to sport practice or after school adventures.
We use our LifeStraw Play water bottles mostly when we are going out to the park, pool, or other public facility. It takes care of my “icky” factor while giving them clean & fresh tasting water to drink. It’s easy to use, just fill the bottle and watch as it empties from the filter. It’s ready to drink in a matter of seconds and the kids say it removes most of the bad smells associated with some public utilities.
The kids should be able to use the included filter with the LifeStraw for at least a year, depending on use. But here’s a great product feature: you can’t drink through the LifeStraw once it’s full of collected impurities. It simply won’t work anymore, so no worrying if your kid’s water is safe or not.
Now, it’s not meant for certain sources of water like the sea or ocean, and certainly don’t use them on standing/brackish water either. This particular version of the LifeStraw isn’t meant for filtering everything that is present in that kind of water. For us that isn’t a big deal since we’re only using them when we’re running around town or heading out for games and things. And the bottle itself is BPA-free and the bottle & lid are dishwasher safe. Just be sure to remove the filters before you run it; I keep mine on the top rack just in case!
Need a new filter? Simply purchase online and replace the one from your bottle. You can also change out the carbon capsule which helps reduce the taste of chlorine as well as herbicides from the water. There are also other options from LifeStraw based on what you and your family may need. LifeStraw is definitely the better water bottle for kids and helps keep them hydrated with clean water while they are away from home.
