It seems only yesterday we were complaining about the heat. However, the crisp air of Fall is already here and that means the Winter chill is right behind it! If you are anything like me the least little change in weather brings you an unwanted gift – sniffles and a scratchy throat. Once the cold Winter sets in, colds are sure to be part of the picture. But, who has time to be sick? Not me! This year I am prepared to avoid sickness with these tips to keep my family healthy and strong ALL winter!
While it may be impossible to totally avoid all sickness, we can stop most of it in its tracks. And, if it does happen, we can be prepared to boot it out the door in record time flat and get back to our busy lives!
5 Tips to Avoid Sickness and Help Keep Your Family Healthy & Strong ALL Winter
1. Wash Your Hands Often
We have heard it all our life – “wash your hands” – well, it really does help! Frequently washing hands will help prevent viruses and bad bacteria from getting into your system and avoid sickness. Before you eat and after you use the bathroom, always wash your hands. Remember the rules! Lather up good and then wash for at least 30 seconds. Be sure and wash under your fingernails too, where germs can easily hide. It’s also a good idea to carry hand sanitizer with you for those times you are not able to wash up.
2. Eat Healthy to Stay Healthy!
Eating healthy is more than just a fad! Eating healthy helps boost your immune system to help fight off unwanted illnesses. Eat plenty of fresh fruits, veggies, lean meats, and fish which contain essential nutrients to keep you strong and healthy. I know it may be hard but cut back on the sweets and other “not so good for your food”.
If you are unsure, or just for good measure, add a daily vitamin to your daily regimen to help boost your daily requirements.
3. Take Some “Me Time” to Relax and Recharge
Stress is a nasty thing as I’m sure you will agree! The effects of stress can begin to weigh on you, eating away at your bodies defenses. Stress not only impairs your immune system but can lead to unhealthy habits. If you are finding your stress levels high and maxed out, take a little “me time” to relax and recharge. It doesn’t have to be much. Maybe take a moment to do some deep breathing, a walk, or take a break with a cup of tea and enjoy the sunshine.
A good night’s sleep is also warranted to help fight off the effects of stress. Getting at least seven hours of sleep will help heal your body and your mind while keeping your body running right and fighting off germs.
4. Exercise
Just because the weather has turned cold, don’t let that deter you from getting a little exercise. You can get a gym membership, follow an at-home workout routine, or shovel snow. If you have a dog, then take a brisk walk around the block! It will not only benefit you but your pet as well! Just 15 minutes a day of exercise will strengthen your body to better withstand illness.
