When I was younger I used to joke about pain in the joints, knee pain, and poor mobility not knowing much about it. I used to think knee pain was a normal sign of aging that I would just accept if, and when, it came about. But after watching my sister struggle throughout her 30s, and finally undergoing bilateral knee replacement at 41, I now urge everyone I know with knee pain to seek treatment — and don’t stop until someone listens to you!
Knee pain really slows you down. Before my sister had both of her knees replaced she could hardly walk up the steps anymore without severe pain. We stopped shopping together and she could no longer take her dogs for a walk on her own. As her son’s graduation neared, she feared that she wouldn’t be able to attend without walking assistance. That really scared her. The thought of using a cane, or being in a wheelchair, for her son’s graduation gave her the determination she needed to find a doctor who would listen to her pleas. After a long battle, she finally found a surgeon who would perform a bilateral knee replacement at her young age. Her perseverance is something I admire because she never gave in and allowed anyone to dismiss her pain. She got her relief AND was able to attend her son’s graduation without a cane!
Don’t spend your life on the sidelines – “Hit Play” on your life!
Rejoin your family and friends in the things you love.
Anytime pain prevents you from spending time with those you love OR doing what you love, it’s too much and needs to be evaluated. Keep reminding yourself that knee pain is not okay! Because it is not okay for you to stand on the sidelines as your family and friends move onward. Not when you can do something about it!
Do you find yourself “sitting this one out” often?
Have you spoken with your doctor about your knee pain yet?
Don’t keep missing out. It’s time to hit play.
