There are few things in life that bring me more joy than my children. Likewise, there are few things that bring me more heartache than my child struggling. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that one in every 68 kids are affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). That’s a lot of kids struggling, and their parents are struggling right along with them. I recently read, “Kookabuk Shares His Shovel” by Kevin Howard and Jesse Howard. Kookabuk is a wiry little monkey that will capture the heart of your child!
Kookabuk and his friend Emily enjoy a day at the park and Emily helps him work through sharing his favorite shovel. It’s not easy at first, but with encouragement and patience from his friend, Kookabuk takes a step toward understanding the world around him.
Kookabuk is a fantastic way to introduce your children to the reality that we are not all the same and that is OK! This book hit really close to home for me, as someone very near and dear to my heart struggles with many ASD issues. So many times we, as parents, are busy dealing with “issues” we are having with our children that we forget to really “look” at the child behind the issues. Every child is a gift just waiting to be opened. The wrapping will look different on each one, but deep inside, there’s a treasure begging for someone to find it!
Personally, I think the entire series should be in every classroom in the US. I’m excited to read the rest of the series and see how Kookabuk responds as he learns valuable lessons with his friend, Emily.
