For the past month I have been pinning beautiful DIY decoration ideas on Pinterest and trying to find the best way to blend DIY holiday decor and child’s crafts. What I realized from my pin-fests is that I can modify almost anything to be a child craft for the holidays! That’s where this fun project came in.
I have an adorable harvest block set that my kids love playing with when I’m not looking. With each gentle play session, my kids add more scratches and dings! After years of abuse, I thought it was time for them to have their own set of Halloween blocks!
For this fun Halloween project, all you have to do to help your child(ren) is control the tape and guide them to stay within the tape lines — think “coloring” with a brush!
Painted Halloween Blocks
Supply List:
- Orange Paint
- Black Paint
- Letter Stencils
- Masking Tape
- Small Paint Brush
- 3 2x2x8 Spruce/Pine-Fir Furring Strip
- Sandpaper
Directions:
Cut wood into 15 2x2x2 blocks. You should have 6 inches of leftover wood, set aside for another project. Use sandpaper to smooth blocks in preparation for painting. If your children are helping you sand the blocks, make sure they keep their fingers safe with gloves!
Tape a frame (as thick or thin as you would like) around each side of the face of your block. Paint the face of your block with orange paint. (see photo below)
Reapply paint until you reach the desired brightness and coverage of your choosing. Air drying between as necessary.
After the paint is completely dry. Cover the orange area to protect it. Paint the remainder of your block black — creating a black frame on the face of your block.
Allow to dry.
Remove tape. Using a stencil, apply a black letter to each block. Your blocks should read “H-A-P-P-Y [spacer block] H-A-L-L-O-W-E-E-N”
After the blocks are dry, setup your blocks among your interior Halloween decorations!
Tip: Don’t have a saw at home? That’s okay! Before purchasing the wood for this project, ask if your store will help you cut them! *Lowes Home Improvement will help you after your purchase is complete, but verify that someone is available to assist you before checking out to be on the safe side.
