Rock-N-Roll your Sweet Daughter with this T-Shirt!
Valentine’s Day is almost here and there are crafts everywhere. Why not join in the fun? My daughter was looking through clothes websites and came across a rock-n-roll inspired Valentine’s Day t-shirt that I figured I could make that. It wasn’t hard at all so I wanted to share our Rock-N-Roll Heart T-Shirt.
To get started you have to have the t-shirt. Any t-shirt would work, as long as it fits you. I happened to have some foam hearts that I had from another project last year. I made my daughter put on the shirt (inside out) so I could “measure” where the heart was going to be cut out. I then pinned it to the t-shirt with straight pins. If you don’t have a foam heart left over from last year’s project, you can always use a heart cut out of paper. The search engines on the internet has lots of different sizes and styles.
Using a white colored pencil (chalk would work much better), I traced the heart that was pinned to the inside out of the t-shirt. You’re going to have to have the t-shirt off your model at this point because it’s difficult to draw on the t-shirt while it’s on a person. I actually took a cutting board from my kitchen to use as a hard surface that I could cut on.
Take a ruler and trace out lines, 1 (one) inch apart. I used a quilting ruler because it’s clear and makes it easier to see the previous line. Trace your lines, starting at the top of the heart. You’ll want lines at the top of your heart. That makes it look COOL!
I attempted to use an exacto-knife to cut my lines out of the t-shirt. However, the shirt is stretchy. This means that it doesn’t do what I wanted it to do, which is stay still. So, to the scissors I went. Cut where the lines are on the t-shirt, from outside line of the heart to the other outside line of the heart.
Now it’s time to add the color. Pick out some fabric that will stand out. If you’re using a white t-shirt, use purple, bright pink or red. Of course, my rebellious daughter wanted a black t-shirt for Valentine’s Day, so I told her she needed to choose any other color. We went to the quilting section of the department store and found fat quarters. This was too much fabric, but I can use the rest in another project.
Pin the fabric in place, making sure the entire heart is covered. Then turn the t-shirt right. This is where you sew. I did it by hand, but if you are skilled at sewing t-shirt material, use a sewing machine. I was afraid of it bunching up because of the elastic in the material.
Sew each cut “line” and sew around the outside of the heart. Use a colored thread. This is supposed to show, or stand out. Make sure you make the top “humps” of the heart so that it looks like a heart.
You now have a Rock-N-Roll Valentine’s Day T-Shirt!
