“Before there was Christmas there was a Birthday”
I saw this saying today and I think it is a great reminder that Christmas is the celebration of Jesus’ birth. For children, especially young children, the anticipation of Jesus’ arrival is something they have never experienced. While many may comprehend that Christmas is the celebration of Jesus’ birthday, are they really understanding what it means? Soft Enough for a King is a wonderful visual for children allowing them to prepare for, and be excited about, celebrating Jesus’ birthday.
… but it is more than that!
Soft Enough for a King is not only a fantastic visual tool for parents, but also, a tradition that can be started that teaches children about giving and being kind. The Soft Enough fora King tradition box includes the book, a manger, baby Jesus, and pieces of hay.
After you have read the book and explained the premise to your child, you can set up the empty manger. Each time your child does a good deed or has a worthy act you can give them a hay slip to fill out and place inside your manger. The hope is that your family does enough acts before Christmas to make the manger bed Soft Enough for a King. On Christmas morning your children will awaken to their gifts and the gift of baby Jesus.
About Soft Enough for a King:
Soft Enough for a King makes it easy for families to start their own Tradition of Service. In each box is a handmade wooden Manger, 50 strips of paper “Straw” with space to record acts of kindness, a Christ Child Doll for Christmas Eve, a Poem and a lovingly illustrated picture book.
The storybook for Soft Enough for a King is beautifully illustrated with vibrant colors. I love the mixture of fonts and the modern design of the characters. You can read the story HERE.
My kids loved being able to fill our manger. We struggled with defining a good deed. I had bigger kids suggesting that saying “thank you” to their siblings was kindness enough to receive a piece of “hay” for the manger. Teenager or not, I needed more than an inch of effort if they want to fill our manger before Christmas.
I am looking forward to bringing out baby Jesus on Christmas and sharing the story of Soft Enough for a King with them again. I hope our manger is soft enough– we will see!
