I love patriotic holidays and decorating for them. There is no better way to bring up the discussion of pride for one’s country and the sacrifices made on our behalf than to sit around your dining room table making patriotic crafts with your kids. The littlest ones like to talk about the colors “Why are we only using red, white, and blue? I like purple and orange. Can we use orange?” After a sweet conversation about our country’s colors little ones start to request red, white, and blue on everything (so sweet).
If you have older children, consider talking with them about our current war and the sacrifices that are being made by friends and families you/they may know. After you discuss what our military is facing today, you can bring up past wars and past sacrifices made to protect our freedom and to protect the world from other evils (like Hitler).
(Cupcake Flags are from Elegance & Enchantment)
Another great way to make sure your children understand the purpose and meaning behind the holiday is to watch historical movies about our nation’s history (Pearl Harbor, Flags of our Fathers, Forest Gump, Captain America, Saving Private Ryan, Gone with the Wind, North & South… okay… so, you might need to use parental discretion and skip a few parts depending on the age of your child.) while making your patriotic crafts!
Whatever the setting, make creating patriotic crafts an important part of your schedule this week so you can open the door for learning and understanding with your child(ren). Reinforce your family’s values in a way that may not know already.
