*This review was completed and written by my husband ~ Victoria
As a Floridian that has just moved to the Pacific Northwest, I am dealing with some new winter elements that I have never experienced before. Anyone who lives in harsh-winter climates knows what I’m talking about… snow, ice, and frozen rain. Yuck!
I quickly realized that with these new elements comes one major hidden danger – everything becomes slippery! It has almost been like learning to walk all over again. I initially thought “when the snow melts it will be back to normal, right?” Wrong! The water just turned to ice due to the low temperatures. Add in the muddy mess, and it is an all-around hazard to move around. Just walking out the front door was a extreme hazard.
Thankfully, Mom Does Reviews was able to try out Rainguard Hydro-lok before it hits over 2000 Walmart stores this March. Rainguard is a trusted brand name that I have used in the past with great success. I was Excited to try this product on my flat stone steps to see if it would prevent them from being so slippery under winter conditions.
*The following video is my attempt to demonstrate the application process of Rainguard Hydro-Lok…while five curious children, and one determined preschooler, want to be in on the action too… (enjoy)
Hydro-lok is a single nano-based super hydrophobic treatment that creates a moisture barrier on almost any surface. Hydro-lok contains Micro-lok. Micro-lok what is exactly what you might be thinking. Micro-lok creates a micro-molecular chemical and mechanical bond between the water-repellent chemicals and the substrate. It soaks deep into what you applied it to for water-repellent protection that is not affected by weather or sunlight.
Upon receiving Rainguard Hydro-lok, I took special notice to the fact that the product comes in a spray bottle. This is an environmentally friendly alternative to the aerosal cans that similar products are packaged in. Additionally, I found the instructions provided were very straight-forward and easy to follow.
The opportunities to use Rainguard’s new Hydro-lok on are endless. If you’re unsure, the bottle and website information can give you a few examples of what it can be applied to. Like I stated earlier, my flat stone doorway entrance is my greatest cause for concern. After checking my weather I was able to find the perfect window to apply our Hydro-lok.
IMPORTANT Note: The reason for the weather check is because they want you have a temperature of at least 35 degrees and it must stay above that temperature for at least 48 hours. If you have had freezing temperatures in the days before you apply this product you must wait until what you are working on is thawed. You will also need 48 hours of dry time after you apply your product.
Applying Rainguard Hydro-lok was simple. All I had to do was pull the trigger and apply the product to the surface of my choice. After I applied the first coat, it was dry time. The first coat has to dry for, at least, thirty minutes. I waited a little longer since the kids needed me before I could come right back to it. I snuck outside to apply the second coat before they could catch me.

After everything was dry, of course, I had to see how well it works. We took a few gallon water jugs outside for a little science experiment with the big kids. We noted the water does seem to bead up and flow off the steps quicker than our untreated back steps. The big test will come the next snowfall or freeze.
This a very versatile product that I will use on everything from my boots to camping gear! It was easy to follow the directions and use. Visit Rainguard for more information on Hydro-Lok!
