Your teenager’s room is probably the bane of your existence and perhaps you’re often too scared to even look in the bathroom. There is a parenting myth that girls are cleaner than boys, however, anyone that has ever said that wasn’t aware of just how much stuff a teenage girl actually has.
With makeup, nail polish, beauty products, hair tools, and more, it’s tough to keep the bathroom organized. However, having an organized bathroom is not a parenting myth—it’s a possibility. If your teenage girl has an overflow of bathroom “stuff,” there is a way to achieve order. Read on for a few ideas to help you get the room clear enough to see the counter and the tile floor again.
Makeup Brush Holder
As a makeup collection grows, generally so does the mess in the bathroom. In order to keep makeup brushes clean and organized, there is a simple solution that will take no more than 5 minutes. All you need is an old vase, coffee bean and the brushes. Fill the vase about halfway with the beans and place the brushes brush side up. Not only are the brushes easy to get to, and the coffee beans smell wonderful!
Blow Dryers, Curling Irons, and Straighteners, Oh My!
Hair dryers, curling irons and straightening irons are common in a female-dominant bathroom. These items take up space and cause a huge headache when the cords get tangled and twisted. These things usually get thrown in a drawer or under the sink, but where else can they fit? Take advantage of your space under the sink by utilizing the back of the cupboard door.
You can easily screw a magazine rack on the back of each cabinet door which will create a perfect holding place for the curling iron, hair dryer, straightener, and any other large bulky items like that. This will leave space under the sink for extra toilet paper, towels, or whatever you like to keep under there.
Pretty Polish
A teenage girl will likely have her nail polish scattered around the bathroom, her room, her purse, the car, the list goes on and on. If your teenage daughters’ nail polish collection seems to be never ending, find a good home for the polish by putting them on display in the bathroom.
You can find a cheap or decorative tiered dessert stand or lazy Suzan where all the nail polish can sit in one place. Remember, this will take up counter space, so make sure you buy one that has a few tiers so it doesn’t take up too much counter space.
Ditch the Packaging
Items like Q-tips and cotton ball are frequently used, but they come in big, bulky packages that take up way too much space no matter where you store them. Instead of shoving these boxes and bags under the sink, why not find some cute (maybe even vintage) canisters or vases for every-day items?
Make sure you find canisters that are a good size for the counter—you don’t want them to take up too much space. Once you find the perfect style and size, you can label the canisters appropriately for each item you plan to place inside.
Magnetic Makeup
When you have a lot of makeup, it’s tough to keep it all organized—especially when you’re rushing to get ready in the morning. A great way to know where any item of makeup is at any given time is to put it out in the open where you can see it. This might sound like a disorganized solution, but there is a way to put it on display without laying it all out on the counter.
Invest in a large magnetic board that you can hang on one of the bathroom walls (preferably near the sink and mirror.) Then, attach a small magnetic strip to each item and stick it to the board. Now all the makeup is out of the way and out in the open, so your teen can find anything she needs in a matter of seconds.
Once you get creative with organization, there are plenty of solutions that even your teenage daughter can handle. Whether your daughter is tidy or messy, all of these organization ideas will make it easier to keep the bathroom clean and keep things in order. And if these solutions still leave your teen with a messy bathroom—you should probably stop buying her makeup.
